Creativity is considered a talent; passed as a reason simply because it’s so easy to ape. We all believe in soul mates & that there’s The One made for each of us. Why not apply the same theory to our careers then? Our minds have been fed with the fact-‘We all have unique thumbprints’. Probably means every person is different, right? But yet, we fall prey to the norms of society. Be it in the education we take up or the secure jobs we settle with. It is “Oh so necessary” to have a Bachelor’s degree even if your dreams have nothing to do with what you cram in those 3-4 years of college. It is one thing to have a back-up just in case your plans don’t work out, but letting go of that dream job only because it involves risks is idiocy.
I quote Bobbe Sommer,
Having a low opinion of yourself is not 'modesty.' It's self-destruction. Holding your uniqueness in high regard is not 'egotism.' It's a necessary precondition to happiness and success.
We should have a psychometric test for every student planning to join any course; to check whether they are genuinely interested in the field. I fail to understand the mentality of students taking up Computers for the “job's sake”. You don’t mind putting your interests on the back-burner & lighting up the future of a billion-dollar company. Why they do that? For a seven figure salary. These smarty-pants fail to notice the larger picture. That dear workplace of theirs which makes them work day & night earns ten-fold, or even more. Oh & don’t even talk about students entering through the management quota! Firstly, not getting through that entrance exam was a clear sign that you aren't fit for the given course. Secondly, would a sane person want to get treated by a doctor who got his medical seat after paying butt loads of cash to the college authorities?
I still remember the shiksha.com advert where a nerd, complete with fat glasses decides on a university for his Masters & the rest follow him without questioning the authenticity of the institute. The case is not any different in reality. We consider a general ranking of ‘top institutes’ to be the only criteria of its overall quality, completely ignoring the fact that each of us has different needs.

To all the ones who just can’t stop complaining about how boring their job is or the peeps who dread the course they took up, it’s never too late to find your niche. In today’s world with a million different personalities, we tend to forget who we really are. It’s just so easy to sway. The sense of confusion dawns upon every adult at some point of time, more so in teens. At an age when everything is influential, some are rebellious while the rest give in to whatever they’re said is right. In most cases, the choice of stream of education has been the parents’. Not like the ones who elope to find their calling at a tender age of 15 are making wise decisions either. In order to reduce remorse in future at large, it is very essential that all schools have a career counselling session once the kid is done with schooling; preferably with a neutral party. What good otherwise is a being if he isn't optimizing his capabilities to the fullest?

Stem Cells

A dvertisements of umbilical cord banking have been surfacing for many years now. To quieten my curious mind with the many doubts I had about this therapy and its importance, I spoke to PhD students working in the Vascular Biology lab of Principle Investigator Prof. Maneesha Inamdar in Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research . Here are excerpts from my discussion with them on their research. In layman's terms, what are stem cells and why are they important? Deeti Shetty:   Stem cells are of different types based on their potency. Pluripotent cells are cells which are most primitive; they give rise to an organism. Interest was born in Embryonic Stem Cells (ESC) because from these cells you can give rise to all cell types in your body. They self-renew & they can also differentiate into various types. We study the transition of embryonic stem cells to adult cells & also how these cells are formed. And what are the medical applications of stem c...

Pink Beach

Pink Beach is the story of India's largest salt desert, the temples and palaces of Gujarat. This trip that a bunch of us took to Gujarat a few years ago starts with Ahmedabad, but only up until our flight lands there. We took a little bit of a detour before we could start exploring the city. Mount Abu is a hill station in the neighboring state of Rajasthan and isn't very far, so we decided to drive up there. Here, we stayed at Hotel Gujarat, which is an old house converted into a commercialized old house. In Mount Abu, we first went over to the absolutely serene looking and welcoming Gyan Sarovar or the Om Shanti Om complex, which is home to the Brahma Kumaris. The lessons of listening to your inner soul were repeated so many times, it's imprinted in my head now. We woke up the next day to noise of rain droplets and a foggy sky. Maybe staying back an extra day was a bad idea after all, voiced everyone. But it didn't take very long for that opinion to change as the sun ...

20 Life Lessons I Learnt by 20

1: Be good at keeping secrets. 2: Don't set your goals by what other people deem important. 3: When you expect less, you get more. 4: You will get served the exact opposite of what you'd hoped for but in the end, you'll realize that that is all you ever wanted. 5: Speak well about someone behind their back, or just don't talk. 6: Life, is not fair. It never will be. You will run out of luck when you most need it & hard work doesn't always pay off. 7: Possess the ability to find humor in even the tiniest of incidents during hard times. 8: You don't necessarily have to grab every opportunity that comes your way. It's okay to be picky. 9: Prioritize people. Your time is too precious to spend on the ones that don't really matter. 10: You can always do & apologize after, rather than ask before. But the same theory doesn't apply with words, it's always best to think through instead of having a shoe in mouth. 11: Neither success nor failure sho...
